My daughter (10) and I visited after a heavy snow, so we weren't able to tour the battlefield - the paths are mown, so there's no real way to clear them. However, the museum itself was nice, with a great timeline of important Virginia battles and great artifacts. The family farm house on the property was also interesting, though there aren't many rooms open. The outbuildings, however, were open and interesting - particularly the wheelwright shop. There's a definite VMI presence at the museum and in the artifacts, since the VMI cadets played a vital role in the battle.

One of the most interesting aspects of this battle was the participation of youthful VMI cadets. This is a well maintained museum with interesting, informative exhibits.

We stumbled upon the VA Museum of the Civil War quite by accident and decided to stop --- glad we did! It's a nice, informative, manageable sized museum with plenty of artifacts. It sits on the original battle grounds so you can really use your imagination. Worth a visit.

This museum has terrific exhibits that explain the Shenandoah Valley's role in the civil war. Great balance of artifacts and interpretation. Nice label text & easy to read. Definitely worth a visit!

The Museum tells the story of the 1864 Battle of New Market. And that story was just made into a movie "Field of Lost Shoes". You start with a movie and then you tour the museum insideas well as the grounds outside. Interesting for those interested in the Civil War.

We have visited this museum numerous times, and attended the on-site reenactment of the Battle of New Market two times. The museum especially commemorates the contribution of the cadets of VMI (some as young as 14!) to the Confederate victory here, who arrived when the battle was well underway, and turned the tide to victory. However, the lower part of the museum also has displays in chronological order which show the flow of the Civil War in both Eastern and Western theaters, giving a better grasp of how events in each theater of war affected the other. In addition, there is a living history part of the Museum, the Bushong Farm, which was in the center of the extensive battlefield, with opportunity to walk there and on the other side of the interstate to see how the battle flowed back and forth. On a recent visit to the area we met a descendant of the Bushong family who shared things he experienced at family reunions held there. Pretty cool!Because my husband and I like to read every label on every display, I said the museum takes over 3 hrs. With young children, your could to a much faster pass through which would still give them a feel for the historical impact.

I love visiting historical areas and the Civil War is one of my primary interests. This museum has many paintings, models, life-like displays, old uniforms, and historical documents. They also show a very interesting movie about the Battle at New Market. The battlefield is at the same location as the museum. We enjoyed the museum first and then toured the Battlefield, which if fantastic (rated separately).

Excellent museum about the civil war in general and battle at New Market. Informative film of the battle, also many artifacts, guns, uniforms, maps, etc. Also a walk to the farm and battlefield area of 1864, many outbuildings etc. Very well done and well worth a visit at $10 each. Confusing is that to get to the museum you have to go past another museum which is privately owned but first timers might think this is the official one. That also looks very good.

Great little museum to visit. It's free with Massanutten Resort discount cards or $10/adult without one. Well worth the money. Great film that explained the battle at New Market, advantages and disadvantages of both sides. The battle took place on a farm, and you can tour the house, surrounding buildings and battlefield. We missed the monument trail due to bad weather. If you're looking for something to do in the area, this is an excellent way to spend 2-3 hours. It's self-guided tour, so you decide how much or how little time you want to spend there. One watch out - It can be easily confused with another museum close to Days Inn (the first one you come to).

While vacationing in the area, a flyer attracted our attention and we spent a few hours at this Civil War museum. Admission included a well-done movie, "Field of Lost Shoes", which related the involvement of the VMI cadets in the Battle of New Market. Very moving. The small exhibit in a beautiful building, built to resemble a soldier's drum, was comprehensive and educational. An excellent use of a couple of hours.

Excellent films, artifacts and displays about the battles fought in Virginia. Major emphasis on the local battle in July 1864 where young cadets from Virginia Military Institute fought and 10 died. Adult admission is $10 and seniors $9 good for 7 days. You can also tour the battlefield by foot or by car. Well done museum. Do not mistake this museum for another one close by next to the Days Inn. This is the one you should visit.

We decided to tour this site on a visit to New Market & Luray area. Nice museum and had a movie about Civil War in that area and the VMI cadets/. Walked to the battlefield area and saw the old home and out buildings. It was educational. Not a real Civil War buff but enjoyed the movie and the old home as open to tour inside. Would recommend if you are visiting area and looking for something to see besides the caves. Can do this in a couple hours.

Had some time to kill and was so glad we did. This is an excellent use of 2 hours of your time. Be sure to see the movie as a prelude to your visit. It will set the stage for your visit. The story of the VMI cadets going into battle really brings the Civil War to a personal experience. The museum has just enough artifacts to be interesting and not overwhelm you. The old farm house is furnished to the period of the 1850s. Don't miss this one. (It's the big round building. There is another private museum before you get to this one.)

Great history on the battle at New Market which included "keydets" from Virginia Military Institute. Tour guide was very knowledgeable.
