We walked the entire length of state street on a bitterly cold day. There was outdoor music, tons of shops and places to eat, very safe, and the contemporary art museum was open and free, it was a perfect day.

Most college towns have a street where all the local shops are located but in Madison State Street connects the UW Madison to the Capitol. The shops are quaint the bars are plentiful and new development is constant and making downtown Madison unique.

State Street, Madison is the best place in town for people-watching - mostly students at the University - fun to see the latest in hair, clothes and accessories. No matter the weather, there are always people! There are wonderful little boutiques, a resale shop or two, shoes, imports, and a few restaurants. One entire block touching State Street is being redeveloped. My sad fear is that bit by bit, State Street is losing its character and bohemian atmosphere and is slowly turning into franchise row as higher rents force the small businesses out. Grab the experience while you can!

At the top of State Street sits our beautiful state capital. Following a more European style tradition state st is a pedestrian mall featuring locally owned shops and restaurants. Offering foods from hot dogs to sushi, middle eastern cuisine to taco bell. There are artists working, musicians playing, students talking, people walking, shopping and exercising. It's the heart of the college of experience and what it is to be "from Madison". At the bottom of state street interlibrary mall, with all of its own Madison history. Worth the cost of parking to feel the city.

Any time we were in Madison, a stop on State Street was a must-do. Not so anymore. We are disappointed that most of the shops are "hippie" shops and there isn't much else.Still fun, and there are great restaurants.

State Street runs between the State Capitol and the University of Wisconsin. There are variety of shops, restaurants and coffee houses. Perfect place for people watching. There is something for everyone. Walks are more enjoyable during summer since it can extremely cold in Wisconsin during winter months.

Since my son moved to Madison, we have taken a few walks along State Street and somehow always find a new place to try for refreshment. Worth the walk!

Unique shops, Badger and sports apparel shops, bars, unique dining, treats. State street has everything except traffic.

You can get ethnic food, all kinds of beverages, and Badger attire to start with. Then just sit back and watch the crowd. My favorite was a summer day when I saw a hippie walking the sidewalk in a beret and ankle length winter coat playing a flute and leading a duck on a rope. I told you that you never know what you will see. Welcome to Madison, WI.

This iconic street runs from the State Capitol to Library Square at the University of Wisconsin. As a Bus only Street, State Street offers the pedestrians easy access to the many business' along its corridor.Well known for the diversity of foods and wares, State Street tries to attract an eclectically diverse choice of shops and shop owners. However, as of late, chains seem to me making their way onto State Street. However, if you stop by, you will still experience some of the individual tastes, talents and treats of this Madison attraction.

Wow, the Soap Opera was the most wonderful store I have ever visited for those into making their own soaps or aromatherapy products.

I had not been on State Street for many years and was looking forward to going through all the neat little shops-only problem......there aren't many little shops left there. It is mostly bars and restaurants which is maybe why the few stores that we did go in, like The Soap Opera, were packed. It was a cold walk to the University Book Store but that is always a treat. State Street is for the University as it should be.....with the capital on one end and the university on the other. I would wait until summer to explore.

State Street is one of the places in this town that make me wish that my next visit here comes in the spring when the bars along this street must come alive with college kids being college kids.
