If you are a Frank Lloyd Wright fan and are in the Chicago area, this is a must see. Just a walk around the neighborhood gives you sights of other houses he designed. In May there is a Frank Lloyd Wright walk that I wish I could do. The home has original furniture and some family mementos. The studio is very cool as well. I have been to many FLW homes and this is one is definitely different as it was his first home that he designed.

Our visit to the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio was an unforgettable experience. We really enjoyed the guided tour in a small group very much. The lovely lady (our tour guide) did a great job explaining the life and work of this genius architect. The house and garden are beautiful and well looked after. The souvenir shop offers some great gifts. Also the whole area of Oak Park (apparently Ernest Hemingways birth place) is really worth a long stroll because of all the beautiful houses and nice gardens. Make sure you prebook a tour of the house and studio well in advance. The public train ride from Chicago to Oak Park takes about 40 minutes. We got off one train stop after Oak Park station at Ashland (green line to Harlem). From there it is about a 15 minutes walk to F. L. W. House and Studio (ask a local for direction).

The tours are excellent and the home is fantastic! The docents are very knowledgeable and pay attention to details as they walk you through the home. You can add on by taking either a self-guided tour, or a docent led tour of the Frank Lloyd Write homes near his studio.

This place is a must for anyone interested in American history because Mr Wrights creations are all over the USA. The beauty and utility of his creations constitute a real education. Amazing talent. His home in Oak Park has been preserved in a wonderful manner. The tour guide brought the place to life with his stories about Mr. Wright, his career and family. Mr. Wright lived his work. His home office is a fine tribute to his contributions and his benefactor. One can easily imagine the professional side of the home stocked with numerous architects drafting structures for the clients while Mr. Wright is interviewing the clients in his own office. Very utilitarian but comfortable. The family sections are warm and elegant. For those visiting Chicago, this museum is a must.

The home tour is done so well with informed, polite docents. The additional walking tour with headphones of the neighborhood is delightful in good weather.

I've been to the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio several times - with the kids, on my own, on a date and with friends. Without regard to how one feels about the style he pioneered or the quality of this particular home compared to some of the other homes he designed, this building holds a unique and special place in the history of American architecture. The charm is that this was both FLW's home and workplace at the peak of his early success. Some of the guides are better than others and the best ones will really give you a sense of what both their family and work life were all about - and how it evolved over time. Like most of us today, their home was a constant work in progress. Some guides may not explain what those who have lived in the area before it became a landmark have always known - which is that the building had been sold and subdivided into up to 7 apartments. Considering that, the restoration is truly remarkable and has been a labor of love for countless FLW fans for about 40 years now.If one hasn't been to the Robie House, Falling Water, etc. already, you could make a case for seeing this home last. That allows you see how his own home and studio was a bit of laboratory for other projects. The home is beautiful any time of year. However, if you are traveling to see it, I would recommend coming in the spring or early summer but avoid the FLW "events"; they tend to draw larger crowds than the community can accommodate. The trees and gardens in the area are quite nice in their own right at this time of year.Consider a walk from Unity Temple in downtown Oak Park up Kenilworth and then return down Forest. Kenilworth was the home of many of the community leaders in the late 19ths and early 20th centuries and the homes built during the Victorian period and immediately afterward are dramatically different from the Prairie Style homes that FLW and those influenced by him built on Forest. It is a nice "compare and contrast" view. The walk is about a 2 mile round trip and well worth the time. Arrive a little early and allow about 90 minutes for the tour (they have people gather in groups beforehand at the gift shop which takes a bit) and an hour or so for the walk.

I loved seeing the inside of the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio. I learned a lot and came away with many ideas about home and life. How interesting to know that his mother thought he would be an architect, so she bought him special architectural blocks. The children's playroom was out of this world. And his famous cheapness was definitely apparent.I'd really like to go again.

Easy to get to on the green line train to Harlem/Lake. Nice walk through beautiful houses till you come across Frank Lloyd Wright.Nice organised tour with amazing house and furniture. Very knowledgeable guide, a little surprised he want aware of Charles Rennie Mac though, even though they didn't meet their style is so similar and it's somehting they should be aware of. Nevertheless interesting trip.

We've been here 4 times -- and each time we learn something new. It is really worth seeing. The docents are knowledgeable and friendly. A tip -- if you plan to also see Unity Temple and/or the Robie House and/or the rookery look into a membership -- it gets you in for free and will cost less than 2 or 3 tours for a couple.

This Home and Studio is an interesting example of his own early development and around it in the neighborhood are many examples of his early development, from his first private homes to his earliest public building, Unity Temple. Docents are very informed if a bit reverential.

The whole area of Oak Park is charming and very easy to get there from the L. The tour of one of FLW's first home is very nice. It is not a large home but it does have some very spectacular portions. The volunteer was helpful and did not miss anything of interest. Took about 1 hour. You can spent time seeing Oak Park area while you are there and make a day of it.

We made a point of going to Frank Lloyd Wright's home because my son wants to be an architect and he was interested in seeing this. Not being much of an architecture buff myself, I did not know what to expect. We learned so much about Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural style, his artwork and hobbies, and his personal life. His sense of style extended into every aspect of his life and he was also very practical. A fascinating biographical lesson as well as art and history lesson.'

Frank Lloyd Wrights Home and Studio has been very well kept and cared for and its operated by passionate and dedicated volunteers? Our guide was very informative and interesting. Before the tour we were given a map of Forest St where there were other FLW style houses. It was a beautiful walk and the houses were stunning. It's a bit far from the city so you can either cat the metro/train or a taxi but definitely worth the trip.

The tour is interesting, full of detail. The home and studio are gorgeous! It was a great outing for out of town guests here for the holidays.

See where Wright experimented before undertaking paid jobs from the surrounding Oak Park area. This tour was much more informed than the Unity Temple but supplemented each other. After the tour, be sure to walk around the neighbourhood and see if you can pick out houses Wright worked on.
