Quite big medieval castle, you can go on top, funny, they give you a candle at reception. Inside you can also buy a lot of souvenirs.

While the people of Latvia are warm and the history fascinating, winter is not the best season for touring historical sites. Most of them are either closed only partly open.

So if one visits a castle, you must always try to understand what it must have been like in the days when the castle was active. Certainly the lanterns at Cesis helped. It is a lovely old ruins and while there is not much to actually see, we enjoyed just the view of the castle exteriors and exploring the lantern lit interiors. We had a bit of a problem parking, but found a space up on the next street that was marked for 1 hour and it worked perfectly for us. We had time to visit the castle and climbed everywhere allowed and still had time to walk the lovely streets of Old Town Cesis and visit the beautiful nearby church. It was just perfect.

It was nice to get out of Riga and see some more of Latvia and Cesis has a lovely town and castle. I would certainly recommend a visit.

Having seen enough old castles in rest of Europe, I think Cesis Castle is a gem. One thing for sure is you won't feel like you're fighting a crowd for the best vantage spot. We went mid-summer on a weekday and there were maybe 20 other people. What's good is the setup and authenticity, including using a lantern to explore the darker parts of the keeps and none of the stairs/ladders are too challenging. There's also the newer castle buildings containing a lot of artefacts and historical displays. If you can fit both in, it's absolutely worthwhile. Also, make sure you take a walk around the lake aside the castle. A peaceful place to sit and watch the ducks. About 90 minutes driving from Riga, Cesis is one of the most beautiful towns in Latvia.

Cesis Medieval Castle is a must to visit not only because it is just next to the beautiful Castle park. It is located on the hills where our history started thousands of years ago. The castle still reminds of the powerful days the Order of Brothers in Sword spent there. One can experience that while participating in a historical performance, or just strolling among the ruins guided by old type candle lamp. I myself enjoy the visit there any time of the year!

The climb in the dark to the top of the tower is the highlight. Don't try it without a light of some sort - it is really very dark. The castle otherwise is in better condition than most of its age and is surrounded by attractive gardens. Walk through to the church passing the statue of Lenin (lying down now!) by a well-known sculptor.

We toured the Cesis Medlieval castle with our relatives from Latvia. We thought the lantern lit by a candle was a "novelty". We soon found out it was a necessity. The candle light was neededto manuever the winding staircase of the castle. There was a rope for the handrail. It is amazing how the castle was built so many years ago. There ius a nice view from the top for pictures.

Cesis town is a lovely place to stop over, seemingly unchanged over the years, and a look back at how towns used to look. The ruined castle in a small park is well worth wandering around and the town also has a delightful park and pond in the centre. Very pleasant place and a good stop for lunch at least.

I have been to this castle twice. Once in 90's (as a child), and secondly in the 2014th. Both times it made me great impression. Great park, great ruins of the castle. This castle is a must see in Gauja national park and Cesis.

Lovely old castle, you're given a candle to explore the ruins, worth going! Cesis is a very nice town to visit.

Using a candle lantern to explore the underground features of this castle makes one feel a little bit like Indiana Jones. Our group, OAT tour, enjoyed the challenge of playing "Skiddles" in the backyard. Here also is a statue of Lenin in recline position. Nearby is a nice garden with several black swans. Across the road is a supermarket where one can purchase a bottle or two of buckwheat beer.

The whole city Cezis is nice, have a walk around! But the castle is especially nice, and park around. It was renovated and looks very good.

This is a beautifully restored place. The castle visit is in two distinct parts. First is the old, in ruins, section. The highlight here is the narrow, very dark, circular staircase - you are provided with a candle lantern. Very atmospheric. Our guide was very informative.
