What can I add? Those of you who already visited the majestic cathedral knows what I am talking about. A piece of beauty filled with intriguing history, built on top of an ancient church and decorated with the amazing Apulian-Romanic style.Perched on the sea, you will contemplate and enjoy its beauty from every corner, and from dawn till dusk.

A wonderful church, a result of 3 churches built one on the other. You start from the lower one (the most ancient hypogeum of St Lucio, 5th century AD), then walk up to the mediaeval Church of St Mary (marble altar with paintings, 14th-15th century) and finally to the upper church of St Nicola Pellegrino (very simple in decoration, but majestic with white high columns). Once outside, have a look around the church for amazing view of the white facade and walls, and, finally, walk to the end of the long pier to have an amazing view of cathedral and sea

Beautiful cathedral with stunning old door and superb position overlooking the sea. We were fortunate to be there when there was a wedding (on a Monday morning!) and the family welcomed all the visitors to stay for the service. A visit to remember.

The architecture and frescoes of this cathedral are very interesting. Dedicated to S Nicola Pellegrino and built over three floors the crypt is not to be missed. We were on an organised tour which included a guide who told us all the history of the cathedral. It is situated in a lovely position near to the sea and harbour.

I love this kind of churches where the whole beauty comes mostly from the perfect architecture. You enter the cattedrale through the underground part and then you can go up.

The cathedral and the harbour are in a very attractive setting. Famous historically as a major port for the Crusaders to come and go to the Holy Land. Now a major tourist place with imposing buildings and a very attractive harbour/marina surrounded by cafes and restaurants.

Wanderful, gorgeous, totally unexpected. Really worth the visit !It is on 3 level, one is under the see, can you imagine ? It is unesco site.

This high cathedral with its tall bell tower is like a lighthouse in the corner of the Trani's wonderful harbor-lagoon. Its setting against the sea is rare, spectacular, and the very best part of it. It is visible from the entire coastline, and defines entire Trani. However, being an old, Romanesque church, it is very modest. There is very little to see inside, and even the other reviewers who highlight its crypt or older churches underneath it...perhaps haven't seen many other churches in Italy.Perhaps an unfair comparison over the centuries, but if you look for architectural ingenious, artworks, richness and beauty, see the dozens of churches in Rome, Florence, Siena, Orvieto, Pisa. Trani's cathedral is best enjoyed by the sunset, in the gentle breezes from the sea.

This cathedral is located in a large piazza with the sea on two sides. Nice to sit on a bench in late afternoon listening to the water lapping against the stones and someone playing music in front of the cathedral. From all over the city, the cobblestone streets that lead directly to the cathedral have dark stones in the center to lead parishioners to the cathedral.

Just a perfect setting !! Especially on a day with a blue sky and early morning.....Also nice to visit the harbour where the fishermen sell their catch of the night.

The Cathedral is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen; the location, very near the sea, is fantastic.

Unfortunately we were limited with time so it was only a quick 15 minute look around. Very simple although remains of some of the frescos are good.

When you are travelling around Apulia you get to see a lot of churches. After taking in a number of baroque churches and cathedrals with their collections of ornamentation it was a great pleasure to experience the simplicity of a romanesque cathedral, first of all in Bitonto (a friend was married there) and then in Trani. The simplicity of these cathedrals is refreshing and it is difficult to imagine how 12 century frescoes were plastered over in later periods as tastes changed. Attempts to restore these by removing the plaster have unfortunately not been entirely successful but at least they can now be enjoyed by visitors. I think Trani cathedral is special because of its unique position at the edge of the sea. Don't be put off by the entrance down the ramp under the main steps. This is the entrance to the cathedral which takes you in at a lower level. You can then climb the stairs at the side and emerge on the main floor. There is also a staircase on the LHS which takes you down further where you can see excavations showing earlier construction of the site. There is a lot to see in Trani but if you don't have a lot of time then don't miss the cathedral.
