Wow, this cathedral is really stunningly beautiful. It's amazing how many gorgeous cathedrals exist in one city but Regensburg has them. The white and gold really set off the beauty of the interior.

What can I say about the "Alte Kapelle", what isn't already said by my fellow reviewers multiple times. Your breath is taken away when you enter the main chapel. The pictures I added are convincing enough. The history of this chapel goes back to the Dark Ages. The restoration, carried out in the last decade of the 20th century leaves us with a splendid church, where you don't know where to look first for the decorations and paintings. A detail that struck me was the presence of a special, beautifully decorated, lodge, intended for the use of exalted attendees of the service. Justly the number one attraction in Regensburg.

On entering the chapel my mind said wow!! My wife came in behind me and said it out loud. The ceiling and walls are just covered by vivid and colourful paintings.I don't know which church style this is,but it is definitely uplifting.

After Wies church the Old Chapel in Regensburg has the most beautiful Bavarian Rococo decoration and is the oldest church in Bavaria. King Louis the German consecrated the Palace Chapel to the Mother of God. After his death the church fell in despair until Henry II, Holy Roman Emperor, decided to restore it. Designed by the court sculptor Simon Sorg, it depicts scenes from the life of Henryy II and his wife Gwendolyn. In 1747 the Romanesque Basilica and the Gothic choir were turned into Bavarian rococo style. The organ built in 1791 by Nabburger Andrew White is the only organ in the world blessed by a Pope! During his visit in Regensburg in 2006, Pope Benedict XVI was impressed by this organ and blessed it. Now it bears his name and serves the liturgy as well as concerts given in the chapel, too. Grace Chapel is a small quiet room before the main chapel. But it has the Miraculous Image that makes it so special and famous. It's a byzantine icon of Virgin Mary with Jesus that according to the legend, was painted by St.Luke the Evangelist himself. A gift given by Pope Benedict VIII to Henry II in 1014, for his coronation. After many transfers to museums, churches etc. it has been returned to its original place to give some hope to desperate people.Alte Kapelle is minutes away from the Cathedral and the streets and lanes around it are full of significant old buildings.

This was NOT part of our city tour of Regensburg, and it should have been. The church is incredibly beautiful. Just check a map--it's not difficult to find

This is baroque rococo at its best and is really astonishing. One is kept firmly behind grilles and not allowed into the body of the church which is a shame. However one can still appreciate the sumptuousness of the decoration

Would have missed this beautiful sanctuary if I had not seen an article about it. It was not on our official "tour" with Viking, but we had plenty of leisure time to explore on our own. The day was gorgeous and the inside stunning. It is a short walk from the more famous St. Peter's but after travelling through several cities; it was the one I remembered most and after posting pictures of the beautiful inside - got many comments.

Just returned from seeing this sanctuary, and indeed it is quite a contrast to.the darker St. Peter's around the corner. It is full of light even on this overcast, rainy day, probably from.a combination of large windows, cream colored walls, colorful frescoes everywhere, and gold covering maybe 40% of the surface area. However, it would be a far more welcoming place if visitors were not restricted to a small space between the back of the pews and the outer wall, separated by a heavy duty metal fence from the.main place of worship.

We thought the small chapel inside the door we entered was so beautiful. They we saw the door into the main church and were blown away. Absolutely amazing. And on weekends, there is a market just outside their door.

An amazing church! From the outside you have no idea what you will find inside. We only visited for a few minutes, but it is incredible inside.

very unassuming from the outside, as if it's like a block of stone but once inside, the interior decor was bright and colorful. totally the opposite of st. peter's which looks awesome from the outside but is gloomy inside.

A beautiful, light, airy church. It is so heavenly welcoming, especially if you go there right after you visited the cold and dark Dom.

This is a great architectural contrast to St. Peter's, and close enough that it feels almost like a side-by-side comparison if you come here right after. Unlike St. Peter's, this church allows photos as long as there is no service going on. If you have time, check out the church on the Thurn&Taxis grounds for a larger rendition of this style.

We thought this church was magnificent inside, and more beautiful than St. Peter's Cathedral. Usually if you see one church, you've seen them all. Not the case with Alte Kapelle. From the outside it looks quite plain, but once inside you have a wonderful baroque interior.

As others have mentioned, we had a little trouble finding Alte Kapelle. It's just around the corner from the more-visited St. Peter's - some tourist maps have it labelled but it still wasn't obvious. (I'll post a picture of the outside - that might help a little.) It is true that they have the sanctuary protected by heavy gates but it is an amazing example of Baroque style and quite a contrast to the dark simplicity of St. Peter's. I spent a couple of Euros on a little booklet about its history which is fascinating. It existed as far back as 875 AD but was completely transformed in the 18th century when Rococo was much in fashion. It won't take long and I think it was definitely worth our stop.
