Plaza Independencia is a good starting point for a walk around central Montevideo. There are some important buildings and remnants of the Old City Wall. Pedestrianised street leads down to the port market

This point marks the transition between downtown and Ciudad Vieja (old city). There's a big statue in the center and most buildings around are imponent with large columns. Sometimes people smokes marijuana at this square, but it's currently legal (for locals) and they are neighbourly, very peaceful and comunicative. The place is just a few blocks from a few other cool places to go, including Rara Avis, Teatro Solis and Mercado del Puerto.

nice view of the government building, Palicio Salvo, theatre Sislo and the start of the old city. Great center piece of the city and a great place to get some memorable photos of Montevideo

We spent a month in an apartment overlooking Plaza Independencia and we never tired of the view and the action in the square. This is a very clean, spacious and pretty square that serves as the dividing point between the Ciudad Vieja and the Centro. We had the priviledge of watching 2 carnaval parades stage there before the processions started up Avienida 18 de Julio. There is activity virtually 24 hours a day. From a tourist standpoint, views of Palacio Salvo and the Artigas statue and mausoleum (beneath the statue) are the main sights. On the south side are the Casa de Gobiero and the the presidential offices.

The square is nice and we were there on a beautiful summer day. But, as opposed to many other great squares of the world, it is devoid of restaurants and clubs. It's not Sienna, Times Square, Piazza Navarro, etc.

was in montedevao about six years ago there was nothing there that i could recomend.excepting the higher class area and the fact that it has forty kilometers os sea shore.(widest canal in world)

This square is typical to others in South America, there is a large statue to the founding general as well as his mausoleum. Worth a short visit to take in the sights.

Nice historic square with Palacio Salvo and the Ciudadela doors nerby (doors to the old town). Its at the end of 18 de julio in Centro neighborhood.

Nice easy walk from the cruise port. there are a number of plaza/squares. This is nice and if you continue a little further you will be more in the downtown/centre area. Al little different than the old city. There is a Raddison hotel there if you would like to use clean facilities!

Montevideo is not a difficult place to walk around. At the tourist info we got a map that shows where the points of interest are - just follow the map. We walked to the entrance of the old fortress, and saw how the city has tried to preserve this piece of Montevideo history by putting a concrete brick wall at its back to support this old gate. Past the citadel is Plaza Independence. This is a nice open area with fountains, green grass and statue. Solis Theatre, Solis Palace and The Government House surround the square. On the way here, there are lots of police on duty. We felt very safe. Happy travelling!

It was a beautiful day and everyone at our cruise wanted to get out and visit the tourist spots near the port. One of these attractions is the Plaza Independencia, the city center. Its biggest attraction is the statute of General Artigas mounted on his horse. His mausoleum is located at the lower level of the Plaza. Two guards stand in attention and are guarding it. ( See my related review of this attraction). There are benches at the Plaza for one to sit down and enjoy the views. Other attractions near Plaza Independencia: Teatro Solis, Puerta dela Ciudadela, Plaza Constitution and the Cathedral.

It has an huge monument to Artigas, whose mausoleum is under the monument and is worth a visit (pay attention to the opening hours). The Palacio Salvo is located in this place, it was the second highest building in South America when concluded. Close to the Teatro Solis

Interesting place but nothing explaining the buildings or statutes in English. Hard to find anyone who speaks English, including police. Many cruise ship people speak English so would be helpful.

Large plaza with great views of many statues, buildings, and pleasant to sit and watch. Close to many other attractions such as the Old City Gate and area, the Opera House, and shopping areas.
